"Fire and I've Seen Rain" letra

"Yesterday morning they told me you were gone.
Susanne, the plans they made killed you.
I went out this morning and wrote this song,
I don't remember who to send it to.

I saw fire and I saw rain;
I've seen sunny days that I thought would never end;
I've seen lonely times where I couldn't find a friend,
But I always thought I'd see you again.

Won't you despise me, Jesus?
You have to help me make a stand;
You just have to help me get through one more day.
My body aches and my time is near
And I won't do it any other way.

Oh, I've seen fire and I've seen rain;
I've seen sunny days that I thought would never end;
I've seen lonely times where I couldn't find a friend,
But I always thought I'd see you again.

I've been walking my mind for an easy time, with my back to the sun;
Lord knows, when the cold wind blows, it will turn your head.
Well, there are hours on the phone line to talk about things to come;
Sweet dreams and flying machines in pieces on the ground.

Oh, I've seen fire and I've seen rain;
I've seen sunny days that I thought would never end;
I've seen lonely times where I couldn't find a friend,
But I always thought I'd see you, darling, one more time, now.

I thought I would see you one more time;
There are just a few things that come my way this time, now;
Thought I'd see you, thought I'd see you fire and rain, now."

James Taylor Lyrics Explained

James Taylor wrote and sang this song, inspired by a friend who died. Once recorded, this song elevated him to a pop star at age 22 when it became a hit.

Taylor has claimed that he wrote this song three times over the course of 1968. Its composition began while he was auditioning in London forBeatles Apple Records🇧🇷 Taylor later wrote more while in a Manhattan hospital. However, he ended up at the Austin Riggs Center where he was admitted for drug rehabilitation. In 1972, Taylor stated:

"Fire and Rain" has three verses. The first verse is about my reactions to the death of a friend. The second verse is about my arrival in this country with a monkey on my back, and there Jesus is an expression of my desperation to try to get over the moment when my body ached and the moment when I had to do so was approaching. ... And the third verse of that song refers to my Austin Riggs recovery, which lasted about five months.

Although she wrote this when she was only 20, it touches people of all ages and is still relevant over forty years later.

first verse explained

"Yesterday morning I was told you were gone
I don't remember who to send it to
Susanne the plans they made ended up with you
I went out this morning and wrote this song."

When he refers to Susanne, he means Susanne Schnerr. Taylor claims that he used to get high with her and knew her very well. He met her in New York in 1967 and dated her quite often when he was part of a group calledthe flying machine.the flying machineIt was the group where he achieved success as a musician and writer.

Susanne, or whom Taylor affectionately refers to as Suzie, committed suicide. He lived in London with mutual friends. Since her career started to take off and her fame grew, her friends waited until later to break the news to her as they knew Taylor was very excited about her upcoming record deal. He only learned of her suicide six months later.

He also states in an interview that he always felt bad about the line "The plans they made killed you", because people make assumptions about who "they" are. He intended 'they' to be the Fates. His biggest fear was that his parents would think she blamed them. This did not happened.

Explanation of the second verse

"You will not despise me, Jesus
You have to help me make a stand
You just have to see me for another day
My body aches and my time is near
And I won't take it any other way"

He wrote this verse in 1968 after being in a psychiatric hospital. He struggled with heroin addiction. He wrote this as an appeal to Jesus, as in Jesus Christ, to help him 'stand firm' against his drug addiction, portraying how much the habit had taken over him. He exerts the grip the addiction had on him when he screams, "I'm not going to make it any other way."

While it's nice to say that in 1968 he finally kicked the habit, he didn't give up until much later. Fortunately, unlike many like him, he was finally able to resist addiction in 1986 when he got sober. He's been sober ever since, but he still feels like a recovering addict.

third verse explained

"It's taking my mind to an easy time, my back is to the sun
God knows when the cold wind blows it will turn you around
Well there are hours on the phone line to talk about things
Come
Sweet dreams and flying machines in pieces on the ground"

Previously, during his senior year in high school, he had been treated at a hospital for depression. He and a friend, Danny Kortchmar, formed a band called theFlying machine.It was a blessing in disguise when the group fizzled out a few months after starting and he went solo. The last line refers to this band and their previous attempts at success as a writer.

fire and rain meaning

fire and rainIt still is and will probably always be one of my favorite songs. It touches me on a deep level. While I've never experienced depression or drug addiction, I still know what it's like to be at rock bottom, waiting for a moment to come. Life is like a roller coaster ride, with lots of ups and downs, sometimes scary, exciting and sometimes just plain annoying.

I love James Taylor and this song. In the days and years after my mother died, she would remind me of her. I always thought she'd see you again, but she's gone. Thanks for the nice and interesting article.

What a beautiful center! I've loved James Taylor since I first heard him in the '60s when my son in high school was following his work. Thank you for bringing up this 'story' of one of his most beloved songs. He gets my votes!

For a long time I tried to play his songs on the piano. They are not very adaptable to this. Once, however, it occurred to me and I managed to do a good job. very satisfactory

He really is a genius, he's one of my favorite singers of all time.

Attractivefrom Southern California via Texas on June 2, 2012:

Hi A_M, thanks for that explanation. I had no idea you wrote the verses so far away. I just finished a song I started many years ago, so I understand how that goes. I once read that when he heard people say that all his songs sounded the same, he was astonished. He said that he works to vary his songs and song structure, but that he just has a narrow lens where everybody comes from, so it sounds like that.

I agree with him, his songs aren't as easy to play as you might think if you actually play them like him. That's a bit of genius there. 🇧🇷

When lyrics, melody and emotion collide, you have a classic, something that never gets old. James is in (what I would call) the third act of his career now, but he still sings and plays with the same fervor as in his early days. I still love to hear him sing
