dr Stephen Smith is a board certified orthopedic surgeon with a particular interest in pediatrics, osteomyelitis, septic implants, limb deformity correction and limb lengthening. After qualifying with a BA and BA Honors, he went on to do genetic research in diabetes with MS. He then completed his Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery at WITS in 2008. After his internship and community service in Port Elizabeth, he stayed to begin his orthopedic training. Under the direction of Dr. T. Bam he developed a strong interest in limb deformities and salvage work.
After 2 years in physical education, Dr. Smith returned to WITS from 2013 to 2017 to complete his orthopedic training. During this time he was heavily involved in research and teaching. He was instrumental in the development and use of a "trauma ring" for external fixation in open fractures and presented his findings at the South African Orthopedic Association (SAOA) and South African Orthopedic Trauma Society (SOATS) meetings. He designed and built some of the equipment used in the development of Chris Hani Baragwanath's first Halo Gravity Traction Unit to help correct spinal deformities.
In total he presented 11 articles at orthopedic conferences in South Africa. Winner of the best presentation 2017 at the SOATS meeting.
During his training, Dr. Smith continues to expand his expertise in deformity correction and limb lengthening.
He continues to attend the annual South African Limb Reconstruction Meetings and has attended advanced limb reconstruction courses in both South Africa and Verona. In 2018, together with her practice partner Dr. Ashley Naidoo the Gauteng Orthopedic Institute. dr Smith continued to expand his knowledge of limb salvage by working with Dr. R. Kyte in the field of tumors and sepsis, focusing on osteomyelitis, septic implants and the Lautenbach method of treatment.
